When to refer

Parents or caregivers do not usually need to seek medical advice if their baby has reflux, as long as the baby is happy, healthy and gaining weight.1

You can advise parents and caregivers to speak to their midwife, health visitor or GP if their baby:1,2

  • Is not improving after two weeks of trying to ease reflux
  • Gets reflux for the first time when they are over six months old
  • Is over 12 months old and still has reflux
  • Is not gaining weight or is losing weight.
