Personalise additional advice

You may be asked if babies and young children need vitamin D supplements. The Department of Health and Social Care recommends:

  • From birth to 12 months, breastfed babies should be given a daily supplement containing 8.5 to 10 mcg of vitamin D
  • Babies fed infant formula should not be given a vitamin D supplement until they are having less than 500 ml of infant formula a day, as infant formula is fortified with vitamin D
  • Children aged one to four years should be given a daily supplement containing 10 mcg of vitamin D.12

You are likely to encounter women who are on the ‘bump, birth, baby’ journey who are seeking advice. These conversations can lead customers to return to your store, so it is important to consider the following:

1.
Have a look at the pregnancy tests in your store and check when they can be reliably used
2.
Familiarise yourself with products available in store and online that may be suitable for pregnant women with common pregnancy-related conditions
3.
Find out which vitamin D supplements are suitable for pregnant women, babies and young children

Remember: if you are unsure, always ask your pharmacist for further advice.
