The gut microbiota is the name for the microorganisms living in a person’s digestive system. Each person has about 300 to 500 different species of bacteria, yeasts and protozoa in their digestive tract and, whilst some microorganisms are harmful to our health, many are incredibly beneficial and even necessary for a healthy body.1
