The structure of the foot1
Our feet are very complicated structures; each foot contains 26 bones and 33 joints. There are also more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments located in the foot.
While the foot muscles are important, it is the tendons that play the most vital role in the movement of the foot. There are four main tendons.
Click on the hotspots below to find out more about them and the plantar fascia.
Achilles tendonThe strongest tendon in the body which joins the calf muscle to the heel bone
Posterior tibialisSupports the arch of the foot
Flexor digitorumHelps the four small toes to curl
Flexor hallucisAllows the big toe to curl
Plantar fasciaThe major ligament that connects the heel to the ball of the foot and toes
