Applying emollients5
Customers suffering from dry skin conditions should be advised to use emollients at all times, even if they are not experiencing symptoms. When applying, they should use a large amount after a bath or shower, or when required, and should smooth it into the skin in the direction the hair grows.
Self care advice
You can advise customers that there are a number of other things they can do to help soothe their dry skin. These include:6
- Taking short, warm baths or showers
- Wearing soft, comfortable clothing
- Washing clothes with detergents that are free of dyes or fragrances
- Drinking plenty of water
- Using a cool compress to irritated, itchy areas.
Customers should be advised to:5,6
- Look for products and soaps that are hypoallergenic, and that are free of fragrances and dyes
- Avoid scrubbing the skin when washing
- Avoid heat – if warm temperatures aggravate their skin, they should keep rooms cool.
