Suncare advice

Talking to your customers about suncare provides an opportunity to prevent skin issues, whether it be minor short-term complaints or conditions with longer term health consequences such as skin cancer.  Helpful advice you can give to customers includes:1,6

  • Wear a high factor sunscreen when going outside, and reapply regularly
  • Stay in the shade between 11am to 3pm when the sunlight is strongest
  • Cover skin with clothing where possible, and wear a wide brimmed hat
  • Check skin regularly (especially moles) to identify any changes

When to refer

Some changes to the skin are normal as skin ages or following hormonal changes, but it is important to be aware of symptoms that require referral to the pharmacist.

Customers with the following symptoms should be referred:6

  • A mole that has changed size, shape or colour
  • A mole that is painful or itchy
  • A mole that is inflamed, bleeding or crusty
  • A new or unusual mark on the skin that has not gone away after a few weeks
