Summer skin complaints

Sunburn

Sunburn is caused by too much sun, leading to hot and sore skin. Skin may feel hot to the touch, be sore or painful and may flake or peel a few days after the sunburn. Severe sunburn may also cause the skin to blister.1

Sunburn can be managed by:1

  • Staying out of the sun
  • Cooling the skin with a cool shower or damp towel
  • Applying aftersun cream
  • Drinking plenty of water
  • Covering sunburnt skin until skin has fully healed

If the sunburn is painful, paracetamol or ibuprofen can be taken to ease discomfort.1

Prickly heat

Prickly heat is also known as heat rash. It is uncomfortable but usually harmless and gets better on its own after a few days.2

Heat rash symptoms include:2

  • Red, small, raised spots (2-4mm in diameter)
  • An itchy, prickly feeling
  • Mild swelling

The rash can appear anywhere on the body and can spread but isn’t contagious.

To manage the symptoms customers can:2

  • Apply something cold, such as a damp cloth, to the rash.
  • Pat the rash rather than scratching or itching it.
  • Avoid perfumed shower gels or creams

Antihistamine tablets or hydrocortisone cream can also help ease the symptoms.
