What is sinusitis?1

The sinuses are four paired cavities (spaces) in the head connected by narrow passages. The sinuses make mucus that drains out of the passages in the nose, keeping the nose clean and free of bacteria, allergens and other pathogens.

The sinuses are normally filled with air, but they can be irritated by bacterial infectionsviral infections and allergies which cause the lining of the sinuses to swell so they become blocked and filled with fluid. This is sinusitis.

There are a number of OTC products available to help manage the symptoms of sinusitis. Also, those stores located in England can refer patients to the Pharmacy First service where appropriate.
