The digestive system is complex; it is made up of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract as well as the liver, pancreas and gallbladder. The GI tract is a series of hollow organs that form a long twisting tube from the mouth to the anus (back passage). The organs that make up the GI tract are the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine and anus.
The main function of the digestive system is to convert the food we eat into nutrients, such as proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals and water; they are essential to maintain a healthy body.
