Empowering you to meet regulatory and best practice requirements

Patient Safety First

This month we are reflecting on the importance of Data Entry (DE) and the Data Accuracy Check (DAC) processes in the accurate provision of medication. This is particularly relevant as the Scan to Accuracy Check (StAC) functionality continues to roll out to our pharmacies. Your Patient Safety Champion will share with you some good practice points for DE and DAC and the mini case studies featured in this month’s Patient Safety Champions’ Letter, which highlight the potential consequences of data entry errors. Please reflect on the factors that led to the incidents in the case studies and how following the correct process could have prevented these. Please share with your Patient Safety Champion any ideas for SMART-ER actions to support patient safety in your pharmacy.

UPDATE: MHRA Drug Safety Update: Valproate

The monthly Drug Safety Update issued by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in September 2024 announced the introduction of new safety measures regarding valproate use in men. Please review these new measures and provide counselling to patients accordingly. The full MHRA update is available here.

NEW: Boots Pharmacy Technician Development Programme

The Pharmacy Technician Development Programme will go live on 7 October 2024 and will be assigned to the Boots Academy learning account of each team member with a pharmacy technician or ACPT job code. Module 1 focuses on coughs and colds, the fundamentals of leadership and operational excellence, along with an introduction to the Boots Macmillan Information Technician (BMIT) programme. If you are a pharmacy technician who does not have a pharmacy technician or ACPT job code (e.g. you are a Store Manager) and wish to undertake the programme, please email a request, including your GPhC number, to learninganddevelopment@boots.co.uk and the programme will be assigned to your Boots Academy learning account. To find out more about the programme, please click on the relevant link: for line managers, for pharmacists, for support staff.

UPDATE: The Boots Healthcare Way - Care Card Update

The Care Card is a tool designed to support pharmacy team members in their over-the-counter medicine sales conversations and aid appropriate referrals to a pharmacy professional. The Care Card has been updated and now advises on which referrals can be directed to a pharmacy technician before requiring pharmacist intervention. This change has been made to enable pharmacy team member and customer access to an appropriate pharmacy professional in a timely
manner. The Care Card can be accessed here

REMINDER: Regularly accessing all electronic platforms available in your store

As per SOP EAN, all electronic platforms available in your store should be accessed on a regular basis. This includes platforms that may be used infrequently, such as the Store Shared Mailbox. Please note that if a patient pays for a PDC delivery (one-off or annual) via Boots.com, the notification will be sent to the Store Shared Mailbox; a one-off delivery paid for in this way may be associated with a prescription that has already been received by the store and accessing the platform regularly will ensure such notifications are actioned in a timely manner.

IMPORTANT: Appropriate sales of eye preparations to contact lens wearers

When considering recommending an eye preparation product to a contact lens wearer, healthcare team members should ensure that product is licensed for use with contact lenses. Contact lens wearers who present with symptoms suggestive of an eye infection, such as bacterial conjunctivitis, should not be recommended treatment over the counter and should be referred to their eyecare practitioner.
